Vase-China/Porcelain
Paper Raffia
2023
This series of Vase "China" is a mixture of Mediterranean and Chinese cultures. To form the Mediterranean side, it is made using traditional Spanish weaving techniques. Historically, this technique has appeared in numerous regions at the same time, such as Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The unique texture is the entrance to the identity of this area. The shape of the white vase resembles the way fishmongers stack fish together in circles to form towers in Spanish fish markets. It is such a unique representation of fish that does not exist in Asia. That is why there are rotating openings from the body of the vase.
To form the Chinese side, the shape of the vases also resembles the shape of Chinese porcelains, which are the etymological root of the word ‘China’. The technique of rising also symbolises the obligatory nature of promotion and joy in Confucian culture.
The blue one intends to explain the difference between the use of cultural symbols of poultry in Western and Eastern cultures. Chicken-shaped containers are widely used in the Western world because of the cultural background related to Easter; but duck-shaped containers are more popular in China because duck symbolizes love in the Chinese context, as ducks usually appear in pairs.
From a material perspective, paper raffia gives the vases a soft texture, delicate appearance, and the lack of functionality in terms of water containment. Along with the flexibility of the Palmeteo as the weaving technique, the vases are shaped like the braids rise, fireworks setting off, and like climbers trying to reach the most brilliant peak; and hence the vases are intertwined with a poetic essence.
